Quick answer: part-time holiday = days worked per week × 5.6. A 3-day week gives 16.8 days, a 4-day week 22.4 days, a 2-day week 11.2 days. Part-timers must be treated no less favourably than full-timers, including on bank holidays.

The bank holiday trap for part-timers

Bank holidays cluster on Mondays and Fridays. A part-timer who never works Mondays would otherwise receive fewer bank holidays than a colleague who does — which is indirect discrimination. The lawful fix is to give the part-timer their pro rata share of bank holidays as flexible days, so both workers end up with the same total allowance. If your employer simply closes on bank holidays and does not adjust your allowance, you are probably being underpaid.

Frequently asked questions

How much holiday does a part-time worker get?

5.6 weeks pro rata: days worked per week × 5.6. Three days a week is 16.8 days a year.

Do part-time workers get bank holidays?

Yes, pro rata. If bank holidays fall on days you do not work, your employer should give you an equivalent number of flexible days.

Is holiday for part-timers calculated in hours or days?

Either works as long as the result is at least 5.6 weeks of your normal week. Hours-based calculations are easier for variable shift patterns.

Can my employer give me fewer than 5.6 weeks because I am part-time?

No. That is unlawful under the Working Time Regulations and the Part-time Workers Regulations.
