Gross pay this week

$1,078.00

46 hours worked

Regular pay$880.00
Time and a half$198.00
Double time$0.00
Overtime premium$66.00
Effective hourly rate$23.43

Quick answer: overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. At $22/hour, 6 overtime hours add $198 (of which $66 is the premium). US federal law requires 1.5× for hours over 40 in a workweek.

How weekly overtime is calculated

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, a workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours. Hours over 40 in that week are overtime, no matter how many hours you worked the week before.

Gross = (regular hours × rate) + (OT hours × rate × 1.5) + (double time hours × rate × 2)

When double time applies

What counts toward the 40 hours

Time actually worked: production time, required training, travel between job sites, and time spent on the employer's premises. Paid leave — holidays, sick days, PTO — does not count toward the 40-hour threshold in most states.

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime after 8 hours or 40 hours?

Federally, after 40 hours in a workweek. California, Colorado, Alaska, Nevada and a few others add daily rules after 8 or 12 hours.

Can my employer make overtime unpaid?

Not for non-exempt employees. Comp time instead of overtime is only lawful in the public sector in most cases.

Do bonuses change my overtime rate?

Yes — non-discretionary bonuses, commissions and shift differentials must be included in the regular rate, which raises overtime pay.

Does overtime apply on a bank holiday?

Only if your contract or a union agreement says so. There is no federal holiday premium.
