Your Overtime Rate

$30.00

$20.00/hr × 1.5 = $30.00 per overtime hour

Regular pay$800.00
Overtime pay$240.00
Overtime premium$80.00
Total pay this week$1,040.00

Quick answer: time and a half is your regular hourly rate × 1.5. At $20/hour the overtime rate is $30/hour, so 8 overtime hours pay $240. Under the US FLSA, non-exempt employees must get 1.5× for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

How to calculate time and a half

  1. Find your regular rate. Hourly: your wage. Salaried: annual salary ÷ 52 ÷ hours per week (usually 40).
  2. Multiply by 1.5 to get the overtime rate. $18/hr → $27/hr.
  3. Count overtime hours. In the US, federal overtime starts after 40 hours in a single workweek.
  4. Multiply the overtime rate by overtime hours, then add regular pay.

The formula the calculator uses:

Total pay = (regular hours × rate) + (overtime hours × rate × 1.5)

Frequently asked questions

What is time and a half on $20 an hour?

$30 per hour. 8 hours of overtime at that rate is $240, on top of your regular pay.

Is time and a half 1.5 or 150%?

They are the same thing: 1.5× your normal rate, i.e. a 50% premium on top of straight time.

What is "double time and a half"?

There is no federal 2.5× rate. People usually mean either double time (2×) or time and a half (1.5×) — pick the multiplier that matches your contract in the tool above.

How do I work out time and a half from a salary?

Convert to an hourly rate first: annual salary ÷ 52 ÷ hours per week, then ×1.5. This calculator does that conversion for you when you choose "A salary".

Does overtime get taxed more?

No — overtime is taxed at your normal rate. It can look like more was withheld because payroll software annualises a bigger paycheque.
